All Aboard the S.S. Nax!

Mural, 2022, Appr. 50x12ft.

237 Millbury St, Worcester, MA.

Worked with Pernet Family Health Service in Worcester, MA to transform this outdoor space into a colorful deep sea wonderland for the kids coming to the location every day! They will be using this area to learn, grow, play and spend time outside together. I designed and sketched out the boat scene but everything else was freestyled on site.

When it came to designing this mural, I kept in mind three things: the goal of the organization, the people who will see it every day and the history of the location. Pernet is a Family Health agency that works to provide families with support to strengthen. I included the phrase “strengthening families” in the clouds in several different languages the organization accommodates for. It’s also in the concept of the boat as they’re all working together to reach their goal. The main people who will use the space every day are the kids. I wanted the kids to be able to see themselves in the piece and included people of color. I also made sure to include a lot of color and characters to make it friendly. Finally, the area that the piece is in is known as “Green Island” as it was surrounded by water. I wanted to call back to that history by including the boat/water.

I love painting this on the highway wall as it had(has) a not so good reputation with people (especially the older folks) in this neighborhood and it’s nice to help take that back.
